Hurricanes star Malachi Toney is set for ankle surgery before Saturday's Notre Dame game

Toney ranks near the top nationally in receiving

73
catches, second among FBS players entering this week
1,027
receiving yards, third among FBS players
13
touchdown catches, tied for second

of Miami's catches this season

If you're planning your Saturday around the Hurricanes, here's the change: receiver Malachi Toney is set for surgery Thursday, Nov. 5 on a high ankle sprain he suffered in Wednesday's practice. A person with knowledge of the matter told The Associated Press he will be sidelined for multiple weeks. Top-ranked Miami (8-0) plays at No. 4 Notre Dame (7-1) at 7:30 p.m. on NBC. Toney has played in all 24 of Miami's games since he enrolled.

How long will he be out? ESPN's Pete Thamel said the surgery will allow him to return for the College Football Playoff and that the typical timeline is at least four weeks. Yahoo Sports' Ross Dellenger reported 4-6 weeks, which makes the ACC Championship Game on Dec. 5 the earliest return. The AP source said the timeline won't be known until after the surgery.

  • Career: 2,238 receiving yards, sixth all-time at Miami
  • Career touchdowns: 23, three shy of Michael Irvin's record
  • Receivers who could step up: Cooper Barkate, Daylyn Upshaw
